SAINT ANDREW'S SOCIETY LECTURE SERIES THE AULD ALLIANCE presented by Editor, Author and Critic, Nicholas Birns
Join us for a talk on the Auld Alliance. From the late 13th century onward, Scotland, and France were allies against England. This talk will examine the making and flourishing of the Auld Alliance in the Hundred Years War and after, and how aspects of this bond survived even after its formal collapse in the wake of the Reformation. The talk will conclude by examining the afterlife of the Auld Alliance in the fiction of Sir Walter Scott and in transatlantic colonialism.

About the Speaker: Nicholas Birns teaches courses in literature and humanities at New York University. He is the author of many academic books and articles, most recently, the Companion to the Australian Novel from Cambridge University Press. He has written on the Middle Ages in his 2013 book Barbarian Memory as well as in several articles. Although he is of partially Scottish descent, his genealogist cousin regretfully told him that he has absolutely no French in his background.
