2022 - 2023 Scholars
We continue to have the privilege of awarding scholarships to a group of exceptional students. Regrettably, this year's Macmillan Scholar was not able to accept the scholarship due to constraints placed on her by her PhD program. Our first
of the two US scholars is Fiona Campbell of Brown University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations with a regional focus on Latin America. Our second US scholar is Sam Neirink of Bowdoin College with a Bachelor
of Arts in Biology and a concentration in Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology. Our one scholar coming from Scotland is Evan Rush with an LLB in Scots Law and Honours of the First Class from the University of Glasgow.
Fiona Campbell
Brown University | The University of Edinburgh Law School
Area of study: Human Rights (LLM)
Born and raised in Washington D.C., Fiona Campbell graduated from Brown University with a B.A. in International Relations with a regional focus on Latin America.
As an undergraduate, she has studied both Spanish and French, and volunteered as an English tutor with the Washington English Center.
Her work with the Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Studies at Brown and the Center for Civilians in Conflict,
as well as a course on modern humanitarian response helped her discover a passion for human rights work.
She is incredibly grateful for the support of the Saint Andrew’s Society of the State of New York as she pursues
her interest in the protection of women and children in conflict through a Masters of Law in Human Rights at the University of Edinburgh Law School.
Fiona is excited to become a Hibs fan, explore the Scottish Highlands, learn more about the history of her grandfather Arthur’s clan — Clan Campbell,
and attend a true Scottish Burns Night supper.
Evan Rush
The University of Glasgow | New York University School of Law
Area of study: Human Rights (LLM)
Evan Rush is a recent graduate of the University of Glasgow, completing an LLB in Scots Law with Honours of the First Class. Evan will be pursuing an LLM at the New York University School of Law, with focus on Human Rights law and Dispute Resolution. Having a passion for reciting Burns poetry, Evan has performed at numerous events both in Scotland and internationally and looks forward to taking on an ambassadorial role during his time in the United States.
Samuel Clark Neirink
Bowdoin College | The University of St. Andrews
Area of study: Evolutionary Ecology (MSc
Sam Neirink is originally from Frankenmuth, Michigan and has received his B.A. in Biology with a concentration in Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. He is interested in working to combat climate change, concentrating specifically on the control of invasive species. Thanks to the generous support of the St. Andrews Society, he will be preparing himself to do just this by pursuing a MSc (Res) in Evolutionary Ecology at the University of St. Andrews, research for which he is incredibly excited. Sam is also a lover of the outdoors and looks forward to much hiking, camping, and paddling in the Scottish wilderness during his free time there. Sam plans on connecting with his ancestral roots while in Scotland by visiting Loch Moy, the seat of Clan Mackintosh.
